10 – Début du rugby en France
En France, le premier club, Le Havre Athlétique, constitué en 1870, jouait à un jeu hybride entre le rugby et le football. Le premier véritable club de rugby français est celui des English Taylors, formé en 1877, suivi par le Paris Football Club un an plus tard. C’est en 1890, sur la suggestion du baron Pierre de Coubertin, que trois écoles françaises de Paris lancent un tournoi scolaire. L’année suivante cinq nouvelles écoles les rejoignent. Ainsi, en 1891, leur nombre s’élève à huit écoles : École Monge, Lycée Buffon, Lous-Le-Grand, Lycée Lakanal, Janson-de-Sailly, Lycée Michelet, Lycée Henry 4 et École Alsacienne.
La commission de football de l’Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques est formée en 1890, et en mars 1892 elle invite les clubs désireux d’entrer dans la compétition à se rapprocher du secrétariat. Seuls le Stade Français et le Racing CF répondent. Le 20 mars 1892, la première finale de coupe française a lieu, avec le baron Pierre de Coubertin comme arbitre. Le bouclier de Brennus, le Saint-Graal du rugby français, conçu par le baron er réalisé par Charles Brennus est remis ce même jour au capitaine vainqueur, Carlos de Candamo. Le Rosslynne Park de Londres devient le premier club étranger à jouer à Paris, en 1892.
L’année suivante, une équipe française fait une tournée en Angleterre. Bien que les joueurs de l’équipe française, médaillés d’or aux Jeux Olympiques de 1900 aient été sélectionnés parmi les deux meilleurs clubs parisiens, la France débute officiellement la compétition au niveau international avec le match contre les All Blacks le 1er janvier 1906. La Fédération Française de Rugby est formée en 1920.

In France the first club, Le Havre Athlétique, was formed in 1870. It played a hybrid form of football, a cross between rugby and soccer. The first genuine rugby club in France was English Taylors formed in Paris in 1877, followed by Paris Football Club a year later. In 1890 at the suggestion of Baron Pierre de Coubertin three French schools from Paris started a School Championship. The following year another five joined in, so in 1891 eight schools Ecole Monge, Lycée Buffon, Louis-le-Grand, Lycée Lakanal, Janson-de-Sailly, Lycée Michelet, Lycée Henry IV and Ecole Alsacienne became involved. The following year the numbers went up again to 13.
The football commission of USFSA was formed in 1890, and in March 1892, it invited the clubs willing to enter a championship to approach the Secretariat. Only two, Stade Français and Racing CF replied and on March 20, 1892 the first French Championship final was played, with Baron Pierre de Coubertin as referee. The Bouclier de Brennus – the Holy Grail of French rugby – designed by de Coubertin and made by Charles Brennus was awarded for the first time to the winning captain Carlos de Candamo that day. Rosslyn Park of London, became the first foreign club to play in Paris in 1892 and the following year a French team toured England.
Although France’s gold medal winning team at the 1900 Olympics was selected from the two leading Paris clubs, France’s official international debut was the match against the All Blacks, on January 1st, 1906. The French Rugby Federation (FFR) was formed in 1920.

Il primo vero club francese di rugby fu l’English Taylors, costituito a Parigi nel 1877, seguito dal Paris Football Club un anno dopo. Nel 1890, su suggerimento del barone Pierre de Coubertin, tre scuole francesi di Parigi diedero vita a un torneo scolastico. L’anno successivo si unirono cinque scuole e nel 1891 il numero salì a otto (École Monge, Lycée Buffon, Louis-le-Grand, Lycée Lakanal, Janson-de-Sailly, Lycée Michelet, Lycée Henri IV e École Alsacienne) e a tredici l’anno successivo.
Il comitato calcistico dell’USFSA (Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques) fu costituito nel 1890 e nel marzo 1892 invitò i club che desideravano partecipare alla competizione a rivolgersi alla segreteria. Solo lo Stade Français e il Racing CF risposero e il 20 marzo 1892 si svolse la prima finale di Coppa di Francia con il barone Pierre de Coubertin come arbitro. Lo Scudo di Brenno (il Santo Graal del rugby francese), disegnato da de Coubertin e realizzato da Charles Brennus, fu consegnato al capitano vincitore, Carlos de Candamo, lo stesso giorno. Il Rosslyn Park di Londra divenne il primo club straniero a giocare a Parigi nel 1892.
L’anno successivo una squadra francese andò in tournée in Inghilterra. Sebbene i giocatori della squadra francese vincitrice della medaglia d’oro ai Giochi Olimpici del 1900 fossero stati selezionati dai due migliori club parigini, la Francia iniziò ufficialmente a competere a livello internazionale con la partita contro gli All Blacks del 1° gennaio 1906. La Federazione Francese di Rugby (FFR) fu costituita nel 1920.
